Are you or someone you know 60 years or older? Are you or that certain someone looking for an opportunity to learn or try something new?
This month is your chance to do just that.
In collaboration with The Works, the Granville Senior Center will be hosting ArtWorks! For Life, a series of 5 free workshops just for seniors to engage and explore their individual creativity. The first two workshops will be held this coming month and will focus on origami-making (October 4) and journal/sketchbook making (October 25). See below for a complete list of workshop dates and times.
All workshops will be taught by Vicki Moon Spiegel, art instructor and artist (formerly with the Columbus Zoo). Nancy Heller, Manager at The Works describes Vicki as a "creative force."
Nancy feels these workshops are important in jogging the memories of seniors and allowing them a space to share their stories. Not only are the workshops designed to tap into individual’s creativity, they also encourage participants to share their stories with each other.
“I think [workshops] are really poignant for people,” Nancy said. “It gives them the confidence that they are creative and can produce art.”
This is a chance for seniors in the Granville community to not only learn something new, but also to regenerate interests they may have had in their youth. It even gives folks the chance to experience something new and create new relationships.
“Any chance to get something new going is very exciting to me,” said Amy Bunyard, Programming and Membership Coordinator at the Granville Senior Center. “And Vicki brings a little more energy to it.”
Materials are provided in each workshop; however, depending on the project, participants are encouraged to bring personal items to use in their work. You do not have to be a Granville resident to participate!
The Works hopes to continue the program in the future, and Nancy would like to acknowledge that these upcoming events would not be possible without the help of the Granville Community Foundation. She is extremely thankful for its support.
“Staying gold” is the goal, according to Amy.
